Gray Whale Dies Bringing Us a Message — With A Stomach Full of Plastic Trash
Hundreds and thousands of whales, sea turtles, and other marine animals, as well as more than a million seabirds, die each year from ocean pollution and the ingestion or entanglement of marine debris. Manmade waste disposed of into our oceans, rivers, lakes, and other waterways harming the natural beauty that lies within.
In July of 2013 a sperm whale became stranded on the shores of Terschelling, a northern island in the Netherlands. Rescue attempts were made, but sadly the whale died. The young male whale was taken in for an autopsy at the port of Harrington, and plastic was found in his stomach. This poor creature had swallowed 59 different plastic items totaling to weigh over 37 pounds, consisting of transparent greenhouse sheeting, plastic bags, 9 meters of rope, 2 flower pots, and plastic spray canisters. All disposed of into the ocean waiting to be gobbled up by the marine life.
