Murder Mystery in Mio Pt.1

David Tyll
Brian Ognjan
A small, hard-drinking town, one much like the one I reside in, kept a secret for years - 18 years to be exact. What happened? Something that will chill you to the bone. Here is the story of David Tyll and Brian Ognjan.

These two friends travelled from the suburbs of Detriot in 1985 to Mio, in northern Michigan, for a nice relaxing weekend of deer hunting. Their fates would come to light as this did not turn out to be any "normal" hunting trip.

When they never returned from their trip, their families suspected foul play because they were responsible men who would not follow through with some of the rumors - like leaving their families to begin new lives. Although the families were right, it took the police 18 years to figure out the truth behind the lies.

Here's the story: The men were seen extremely intoxicated in a bar by a bunch of locals. Barbra B. just happened to be in the bar. She was a town drunk and had had more than a few drinks that night. However, eighteen years later, when talking to police, she assured them that she held her alcohol well and knew everything that happened that night. Also, in the bar were the Duvall brothers - Raymond and Donald - also known as Coco and Jr. Barbra over heard them talking about beating the stumbling hunters to death and feeding them to their pigs because, "pigs have to eat too." That night, Barbra and a friend she was with at the bar left and stumbled home to her friend's house. Once they got there, they heard noises outside so they peaked to see what was going on. They were pleads for help... coming from David Tyll and Brian Ognjan. Coco and Jr. had baseball bats in their hands. According to Barbara, Coco swung the bat, first at David Tyll, and "his head just disappeared." Brian got away but it didn't take long for them to catch him. They stood him up and said, "Look, he peed his pants." Then, they swung at him resulting in the loss of his life as well.

STANDISH - For almost two decades, the mystique shrouding the Duvall brothers' involvement in the disappearance of two metro Detroit hunters mushroomed like an urban legend.

The legend crashed down on top of the pair Wednesday in the 120 minutes it took jurors to find them guilty of first-degree murder in the bludgeoning deaths of Brian Ognjan of St. Clair Shores and David Tyll of Troy.

Raymond (J.R.) Duvall, 52, and Donald (Coco) Duvall, 51, now face a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole for the 1985 murders on a cold, dark, rural road near Mio.

  1. Every branch, limb, twig, leaf and root of the Duvall family tree has murderers. That family makes me wonder if there is a genetic predisposition for murder.

  2. I can't believe that the state of Michigan let the family of those two men go on for 18years!!!!! Shame on that police force and that whole town !!!!! What s disgrace !!!!!!!

    1. As the granddaughter of Barb Boudro your comments piss me off! You are really going to blame the cops? You can NOT arrest and CONVICT with no evidence. Convicting without bodies is hard enough. My grandma was threatened every single year to keep her mouth shut. I was born in 88 and that day they showed up to tell her, "you open your mouth it isn't your life we will take...congrats on the granddaughter." They showed up every single year with pictures of me and my sisters to show that they are always around us!! The guilt of what she knew and the fear for our lives drove her insane. She became an alcoholic and drug addict. She attempted suicide multiple times. So before you start in on your hateful words and opinions, please make sure you know what the hell you are talking about!! My grandma and the police dept are not a disgrace!!! They are hero's!

    2. Oh, really? Because it days here that she was already the town drunk... Not sure how reliable of a source you are... As the somewhat distant family member of Coco and Jr, I'm positive this story is bullshit. Not sure why the police would even take a story from someone who was so drunk they stumbled home in the first place. Its all hearsay.

  3. I was born in Mio. That's NOT the town I knew. My question is why did the sheriff let them go on everything they did? If they indeed terrorized the town, why were they never stopped?

  5. Must be a bunch of Pussies who live in Mio. I don't care how scared the townsfolk were of those "pig" brothers, there certainly had to been a few REAL MEN who would have done to those brothers what they did to the 2 hunters and everybody else in that town who they terrorized. I know several REAL MEN in my city who are war vets, retired cops,MMA fighters, boxers, who won't be bullied by ANYONE! Most towns are like that.....MIO ISN'T!

  9. I can believe she was too scared to tell the police. But after years of this, you'd think she was scared enough to say "what's to stop them from killing me anyway even if I do what they want?"

  10. You know I stayed at that lodge the week before this happen.
We checked out just before. I don't live down state anymore. But a lot of shit was going on. We had a car broken in to our guns roped off from the lodge parking lot. I remember talking to Bar b and a girl in a wheelchair who had a restaurant. Bar b was pretty level headed. She was just scared shit less. I'm loaded that the other 3 asshole were not gone after. I'd like to get my hands on them so the family could give a proper grave. I'm sure that some Duvall
    Knows where the remains are

  12. I don't know how people can just turn a blind eye to this kind of thing, how can you live with yourself?

  13. People in the town were all afraid to say anything Amanda and you darn well know those brothers were evil men! Everyone was afraid of them..... I mean 7 of them and the youngest told about the hunters car being taken apart by he and his brothers! Shame on you for covering up for them. There was more than one witness who said when they were all together, evil was in the house per say. I feel for the two men (hunters) and I hope these evil kin of yours rot in hell! I'm sure you're nothing like them but pleasssse don't try to justify anything. Barbara told the truth and the town knew they were the ones who could have possibly done it and they did too. Poor detective was horrified too and cried in his car after he heard how these hunters died. Shame on you Amanda! I see blood is thicker than water in your case!!!

  14. If there was no evidence why did they plead guilty? And what happened to the other brothers I thought they were also involved?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yeah I'm sure those evil brothers know where the remains are but one witness heard them say they fed the remains to their pigs! Evil and sick these brothers! How can relatives stick up for them? I would be ashamed for anyone to know I was even related to them!

    ReplyDelete
  16. It's not hearsay Amanda! The detectives involved told their story and with true emotion unlike your kinfolk, (since you want everyone to know that). Stop being so ignorant! I bet you've even heard stories from your relatives about how evil and cruel they could be. I'm sure you know more than you're telling and I'm positive your relatives have horror stories of other things they did but you want to keep denying they did this? What about these two hunters? What about the two families they left behind? Where's your concern for them? Yeah exactly! What happened to the other 5 brothers? They deserve prison time too. They knew!

  18. The Duvall brothers are nothing but low life, lazy, trailer park, dirt bag scum that don't deserve to be alive. Are they Inbreds or what??? This story made me think of the movie "The Hills Have Eyes" Shame on anyone who knew & didn't rat them out because they were afraid of these pussy ass bastards. Being Military, I would of went to the cops then sat on my porch waiting for them and showed them what a real man is when they showed up. I hope and pray that they receive the full wrath of God and then some. Friggen punk ass losers...

  19. Amanda it's 2 bad apples don't ruin the whole BARREL, not the whole tree. And it's get off your high HORSE, not high goat. You must have done poorly in school and flunked 7th grade, and I'm sure the drugs didn't help.
