Mother's Passion to Save Others Survives Her Daughter's Murder

Crime: Janice Rott founded the Missing Children's Network of Michigan to help parents and police track down lost youngsters.

MANCELONA, Mich. — Janice Rott sits tensely in the back seat as the car bumps along a dirt road, clouds of dust rising in its wake. Her eyes dart back and forth, scanning trees, marshes, ramshackle trailers, fishing huts.
"My baby, my poor baby," she murmurs in a low, gravelly voice. "Oh, God, was she crying? Did she cry for me? She must have been so scared."
Somewhere in these remote northern Michigan woodlands, a killer dumped the body of Rott's 16-year-old daughter nearly two years ago. Mushroom hunters found the remains of Kathey Lynn Horn in May near the Otsego-Charlevoix county line.
Rott had been obsessed with finding her daughter, quitting her job as a waitress to devote all her time to the quest.
It's over now, but she cannot let go.

Murder trial for Czinki

GAYLORD - District Judge Patricia Morse bound 36-year-old David Paul Czinki over to circuit court Wednesday on a second-degree murder charge saying circumstantial evidence linking him to the 1994 death of Traverse City High School student Kathryn Horn was enough to send the case to trial. His arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday, May 8 at 1:30 p.m. in the 46th Circuit Trial Court.

Czinki, who did not speak during the preliminary examination, appeared in district court dressed in jailhouse orange with his attorney James Deamud of Prudenville. Czinki is currently serving six to eight years for an unrelated charge of receiving stolen property. He could serve up to life in prison if convicted on the murder charge.
"This is just the beginning," said Horn's mother, Janice Rott, who testified the last time she saw her daughter was the Friday morning before she disappeared Sept. 24, 1994. "I was just glad a lot of people came forward to say what happened."

AND HERE

Kathey Horn, the 16-year-old teen who was found dead after she disappeared over 20 years ago, is the subject of a dramatic documentary tonight on Investigation Discovery. The crime show Nightmare Next Door will tell Kathey Horn’s story through interviews with law enforcement officials and others who were close to the investigation. Nightmare Next Door dramatizes a new murder case every Thursday.
Kathey Horn’s story made news headlines back in 1994 when the Traverse City High School student disappeared after a night out with friends. According to Horn’s mother, she had plans to attend a dance and meet up with friends at a coffee house. When she didn’t return home, it was revealed that she and some friends had accepted a ride with an older acquaintance after leaving the coffee shop, according to the Los Angeles Times.
A massive search was launched to find Kathey Horn but nothing turned up, until mushroom hunters found her clothing in a heavily wooded area along Pike School Road two years later. The missing girl’s human remains were discovered about 10 days later. An autopsy report concluded that the body was that of Kathey Horn. Examiners were unable to make an exact determination of death. Law enforcement officials were later able to link David Paul Czinki to the crime. He was eventually convicted of her murder.
