The City firing squad
should lower the guns and spare Jered Ottenwess. There’s a problem here,
but executing a scapegoat won’t solve it.
The
City Manager’s arrest for drunkenness and domestic violence is partly a
story of one man’s illness. Secretly, we just learned, he got hammered
and stayed hammered every weekend. He was handcuffed by City cops at his
home with a .39 blood alcohol level and a terrified family. Everyone
acted surprised – Commissioners, department heads, cops he worked with
daily.
They all claim
Ottenwess, who reportedly binged three days a week for the past year,
totally hid it. Really? Friday to Sunday smashed, but no red eyes on
Monday? Doubtful. Weekends, while City business kept going, not one
slurred phone call from a guy with a .39 habit? Doubtful.
The
official version of this incident seems like a political cakewalk where
everyone dashes for a seat when the music stops. The denials are as
difficult to swallow as the amount of liquor he managed to imbibe.
