I am wading in the
lifeblood of Michigan, the Au Sable River. My left arm tenses as I cast.
I'm not a lefty, but the temporarily useless right hand won't be able
to reel in a fish for at least a month. Still, it's not a fruitless
exercise, it's water therapy — good for the body and soul.
As
I gaze at the flow an Isonychia dun drifts by. I wonder how the waters
will change — the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality approved
a permit in July 2014 for a local fish farmer to add millions of
gallons of fish feces effluent to this pristine fishery.
Dan
Vogler of Harrietta Hills Trout Farm, LLC plans to increase production
of the Grayling Fish Hatchery, situated on the East Branch of the
river, from 20,000 pounds of fish biomass a year to 300,000.
It
is a flow-through facility, with all fecal matter and any potential
pathogens flowing out of the fish farm and directly into the river.
