New York rats could harbour the PLAGUE: City rodents carry fleas that can spread the Black Death to humans

• Study collected 6,500 specimens of fleas, lice and mites from 133 rats
• Among them were 500 Oriental fleas who can transmit bubonic plague
• 'It's not that these parasites can infest our bodies,' Professor Matthew Frye said 'but they can feed on us while seeking other rats to infest'
• Some of the fleas also harboured harmful strains of Bartonella bacteria
