The loneliest chimp in the world: Ponso has lived alone on a remote African island for three years since his family died after medical lab marooned them there - but he still has a hug for one of the first outsiders to see him alive

Ponso has been living by himself on a tiny island off Ivory Coast since 2013

His only companion was Germain, a nearby villager who brings the chimp his only source of food and water

But this month Ponso was visited by Estelle Raballand, the director of the Chimpanzee Conservation Center

He immediately embraced her in a hug and laughed as she touched him

Ponso was one of dozens of chimps abandoned on islands by the New York Blood Center after he was used for medical testing
