The loneliest chimp in the world: Ponso has lived alone on a remote African island for three years since his family died after medical lab marooned them there - but he still has a hug for one of the first outsiders to see him alive

  • Ponso has been living by himself on a tiny island off Ivory Coast since 2013
  • His only companion was Germain, a nearby villager who brings the chimp his only source of food and water
  • But this month Ponso was visited by Estelle Raballand, the director of the Chimpanzee Conservation Center
  • He immediately embraced her in a hug and laughed as she touched him
  • Ponso was one of dozens of chimps abandoned on islands by the New York Blood Center after he was used for medical testing
